Read ‘Em and Weep

Since the Trayvon Martin case dominated the airwaves a few weeks ago, I’ve heard several journalists ask the question: Are race relations better or worse since the election of President Barack Obama?  The responses were varied.  The optimistic side of me wants to believe things have gotten better, because now we hear more people of various ethnic backgrounds agreeing to the same cases of social injustice.  Seeing a multi-racial man as the most powerful figure in the world has made many people proud, but also provides a gut wrenching reality check to those who still can’t swallow the accomplishments of someone who doesn’t look like them.  This makes me feel race relations are just the same; it’s just now social media platforms have given people the opportunity to voice their opinions for a wider audience to know how they feel and that is why we’re feeling this barrage of tension.   Before the phenomenon of sharing your thoughts via blogs, Facebook, Twitter and comment boxes on various websites, your opinions were either shared with your family or close friends or you kept them to yourself.  You never knew what your colleague or next door neighbor thought, and more than likely you still don’t.  But you aren’t as surprised knowing they may be spewing hate behind a keyboard all the while they are smiling in your face.

My friend posted this story yesterday on his Facebook wall.  This happened in Cincinnati, Ohio last summer – June 2011.  After seeing this maybe I would answer the aforementioned question differently.  It’s unfortunate that the hatred gets the spotlight when I know there is a lot of love and kindness in the world.  I suppose I am guilty of shining a spotlight on it since here I am blogging about it.  {**sigh**}

SunRoof Snaps

Another installment of red light activity in my car, looking toward the sky and capturing my surroundings.  Keep your head to the sky.  Happy Friday!

Raindrops on Roses

…and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

I am turning a page today and thinking of things that make me happy.

Roosevelt’s Backyard

Well, sort of.  The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is located at the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC.  The Tidal Basin is home to the famed cherry trees that were gifted by Tokyo a century ago.  The National Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled to kickoff on Tuesday, March 20.  I thought I’d share a preview of what’s in store from photos I took last year.

Retouch Me in the Morning

When I started college I wanted to document campus life, so everyday I carried a camera around with me in my backpack.  That was in 1988 – a decade before camera phones came into existence.  That was before the popularity of digital cameras.  It was the day of old school picture-taking with rolls of film you had to drop off for developing, and wait several days hoping the pictures would come out the way you envisioned them.  Nowadays everyone is channeling their inner Gordon Parks by snapping pictures with their smartphones, capturing every daily detail of their lives.  I recently challenged myself by doing a 365 Project – taking a photo every day for a year.  It’s amazing the beauty you can find when you just take the time to stop and soak in your surroundings.  Even though my project ended a few months ago I still get inspired to capture the world around me.  Here are some random shots from the past couple of months.

Rock Creek Park

Whenever Springlike weather is in the forecast people pour out of their houses and flood the great outdoors.  Yesterday morning I said I think I’ll go for a walk outside and soak up some sunshine.  Off to Rock Creek Park I went and strolled down through the National Zoo.  I snapped a few shots and witnessed nature in motion.  After looking through the slideshow you’ll see why the lyrics to The Blackbyrds’ Rock Creek Park came to light:

Doing it in the park, Doing it after dark, Oh yeah, Rock Creek Park, Oh yeah, Rock Creek Park

Ready. Set. Smile.

I received an email the other day that was full of pictures of babies and animals.  It was one of those emails that was a forward, from a forward, from a forward.  I cannot credit any of the photos because that information was not provided.  What I can provide is some cuteness and the ability to make you smile.  These images lifted my spirits.  Hope they can lift yours too.  Happy Friday!

Red Light Sunroof Snapshots

The expression ‘It’s a perfect day there’s not a cloud in the sky’ never made sense to me.  I recall hearing it repeated endlessly when describing the morning of September 11, 2001.  I distinctly remember the thought crossed my own mind when I was walking the streets of Manhattan that morning on the way to the office.  And we all know that day was anything but perfect.

Shifting gears, I believe the expression is discriminatory.  I love clouds and believe they bring more character to the sky.   I enjoy looking up and seeing the various formations and how they softly shift in the open air.  Having a sunroof in my car gives me visual stimulation.  The past couple of days I was rolling around with the sunroof open, which is usually unheard of this time of year in the DC area.  So, I decided to do a red light sunroof photo shoot; every time I got caught at a red light I’d look up and snap a shot.  Simple.  Easy breezy.  And actually, kind of perfect to me.

Rock the Boat

The incredible images of the luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia that lies stricken off the shore of the Tuscan island of Giglio are so haunting.  I know this sort of accident is a rare but it reinforces my thinking of why I never desired to take a cruise.
