Purple Rain

Even though as a Jehovah’s Witness I know he does not observe it, but I wanted to honor the birthday of Prince Rogers Nelson in today’s Black Music Month spotlight.  I will always love the performance of Purple Rain he did with the Revolution at the 1985 American Music Awards.  Watching it still gives me goose bumps and puts a big smile on my face.  It’s the main reason I will not throw away my VHS copy of the award show.  Yes, I still have it – it’s the third tape from the left!  And please read this hilarious commentary about the awards show – you will not regret it!

*In 1979 President Jimmy Carter decreed that June would be Black Music Month.  Three decades later in 2009 President Barack Obama revamped the title and declared June African-American Music Appreciation Month.  Each day this month I am turning up the volume on an artist or song brought to you by the letter R.  Enjoy!*
