Reprise Wish List

Tonight the beloved 80’s drama Dallas returns to the small screen on TNT.  We all have an opportunity to head back to Southfork to see what JR, Sue Ellen, Bobby and their offspring are up to 20 years after going off the air in 1991.  I may have to tune in for this – or at least record it.  There are a few other sequels I would be entertained in watching.  Several come to mind but some would never happen because either:

  1. Some of the primary actors are no longer with us (Patrick Swayze/Dirty Dancing)
  2. Their characters died in the movie/show (Ralph Macchio and Matt Dillon/The Outsiders)
  3. Not healthy enough to do it (Michael J. Fox/Family Ties)
  4. They are simply so uber-famous they would never play their character again (Will Smith/Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Tom Hanks/Bosom Buddies, Robin Williams/Mork & Mindy)

Here are 10 sequels or former cast members I would like to see reunited on the small or big screen in a project together – not just an entertainment show interview segment:

9 to 5: Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda.  What became of this powerful trio who took over Consolidated Companies after overthrowing their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss?

Fly Girls: All of them should do a choreographed routine together on So You Think You Can Dance. It would be something to get Rosie Perez, Jennifer Lopez, Carrieanne Inaba, Laurieann “Boom Kat” Gibson and crew all in step at the same time.

Living Single: Queen Latifah, Kim Coles, Kim Fields, Erika Alexander, John Henton, Terrence “T. C.” Carson.  Are they all still single holding it down in Brooklyn?  Did Flava magazine fold or become the next Rolling Stone?  Did Regine ever give up her wigs and opt for weaves…or better yet, go natural?

Silver Spoons: Rick Schroder, Alfonso Ribeiro, Jason Bateman.  They could reprise their original characters, or come up with a completely different show.  I think these three together would have great chemistry and could generate on-screen magic.

Square Pegs: Sarah Jessica Parker, Amy Linker, Tracy Nelson, Jami Gertz.  Where are there characters now?  Are they still square?  Did they have children and are they square?  Or are they all like, wanting to be like, totally tubular still?

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?: This would have nothing to do with Ashton Kutcher, but everything to do with showcasing the characters played by Sydney Poitier and Katharine Houghton, and their children and grandchildren.  It would contrast race relations from the 1967 film to present day.  Wow, that was 45 years ago!

WKRP in Cincinnati: Gary Sandy, Howard Hesseman, Loni Anderson, Richard Sanders, Frank Bonner, Tim Reid, Jan Smithers, Gordon Jump (RIP).  We wouldn’t have our beloved station manager Arthur Carlson, but the rest of the gang could stir up some trouble and showcase their antics at good ol’ WKRP.

Alice: Linda Lavin, Beth Howland, Phillip McKeon, Polly Holliday, Vic Tayback (RIP). Mel’s Diner is still standing and the ladies are still serving up dishes but maybe with a little more Golden Girl flair.  Any excuse to get the expression “Kiss my grits” back on the airwaves works for me!

A Different World: The offspring of our beloved cast would now be attending Hillman College.  Plus, we’d get to see what became of all the original cast members’ characters.

Little Darlings: Kristy McNichol, Tatum O’Neal, Matt Dillon, Cynthia Nixon.  It was the battle between Ferris and Angel to see who would lose their virginity first.  Did these two girls from opposite sides of the tracks remain friends after summer camp?  Did Randy and Angel ever find their way back to each other?  Did Sunshine keep her hippie ways or become a high-powered attorney in New York City?

  1. This is the BEST list of shows ever! I want to see updates to every single one, especially Silver Spoons, Little Darlings (Tatum had the best hair!) and Fly Girls (can any of them still bust a move besides JLO?).

    • If they can bring back Dallas I don’t see why one of these couldn’t make someone’s pitch list to a studio. I have a feeling all of those Fly Girls can still break it down – maybe some more than others!
