A Soundtrack for Our Songbird Tori

May Tori's memory live on with us through the music she loved to sing.

May Tori’s memory live on with us through the music she loved to sing.

In preparation to formally celebrate the life of my dear college friend Victoria Martin, I thought it only fitting to share a piece of the soundtrack of her life. For those of us who were blessed to bear witness to her vocal gymnastics, it was such a treat to hear Tori express herself musically. She loved R&B, jazz, the Blues and standards, but we know there was nothing standard about our little songbird.

While studying at The University of Virginia she was a member of the all-female a cappella group, The Virginia Belles. Some of the following songs she performed with the Belles, and all of the others are tunes that will always remind me of her light, radiance and spirit for life. I hope you enjoy the selections. I know you will enjoy them even more if you close your eyes and envision Tori’s rendition of each one.

Covering Common [273/365]

Common-Towson-University-Podium-Feb13Last night I had the opportunity to play paparazzi to capture one of my clients. Common, the “King of Conscious Hip Hop,” spoke to a packed house at Towson University. Freshman Lexa Goldbeck said,

Thank you Common for inspiring so many of us to believe in our greatness and to follow our paths and to never give up. I’m very inspired by everything you have said today! I love my school for putting all of this together!

December to Remember: True Grit [194/365]

Meet Me at the Go-GoHands down – this is my favorite and funniest photo from my high school days.  To go to a Go-Go performance in the 80s was a big deal as a teenager in the DC area.  This was taken at the Rare Essence show at Sidwell Friends.  Cardinal rules for picture posing at a Go-Go: (1) there must be a graffiti backdrop or a large fan back wicker chair to sit in or stand around, (2) no smiling allowed and (3) athletic gear is desired attire.  We’ve got that covered.  Now, let’s all Do the Mickey, the Happy Feet or Run Joe.
